Travel Deeper Insider - Secret Taco Mission

Happy Thursday from San Diego!

I left my house at midnight on Saturday to drive two hours north to Los Angeles.

My goal was to film a Day in the Life of an Iconic Street Taco family in East LA - I know, I’m still working on a shorter title, ha!

They start cooking at 2am, so I wanted to get there in time to document the entire process.

When I pulled up to a dark house, in a questionable neighborhood, in the middle of the night – the all-too-familiar thought of what the hell am I doing here?” surfaces again.

Adding to the uncertainty is a car approaching slowly. I grabbed my camera gear from the backseat as the tinted out Honda stopped alongside me – Shit.

The back doors swing open, and two teenagers pop out quickly; clearly, they’ve had a long night.

I make eye contact as they circle my car and disappear behind the house.

Ahhhh, they work here. Of course. You big baby.

Under a big makeshift tent in the backyard, there’s a thriving family-run carnitas business that has been a staple in this community for over 30 years – and I got a chance to go behind the scenes for the day!

The full episode from this experience will be live this Saturday on my main YouTube channel.

COOL THING IN TRAVEL

TSA just showed a new concept that could completely change airport security screenings as we know them.

They're calling it the "self-service screening system" - basically just a fancy way to say self-checkout, and It’s being tested in Las Vegas right now.

I already have a love/hate relationship with self-checkouts at grocery stores, so I’m curious to see how much of a disaster this will be (at first).

I bet a group of security guards came together and said, “can’t you just get a robot to tell these idiots for the 10,000th time to take off their shoes, remove their belts, and toss their liter of cola.”

Unfortunately, it’s only during limited times and terminals, so I wasn’t able to test it out myself when I was there last week.

I’ll be back in Sin City again at the end of April, so hopefully I can track it down then.

Also, on a different note… NEVER stay at the Circus Circus in Las Vegas. Long story short, I made that mistake one night of my trip. Yikes! This photo was taken before I checked in. No thumbs up after that.

RESOURCE OF THE WEEK

I’m going to dip my toes into the proverbial “credit card hacking” water from time to time in this section – as always, let me know if you want more resources like this.

Let me be clear, the credit card companies are NOT* paying me to promote these cards.

*Maybe one day they will, but I’ll let you know if/when that ever happens.

If you’re into the points and miles game, let me give you a heads up…

Right now, the Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card is offering an intro offer of 100,000 bonus points and has a $95 annual fee - that’s about as good as it gets.

So, if you’re in need of a new business card, check this one out.

You need to spend $8,000 in the first three months to get the bonus, but that’s completely doable if you have any big transactions coming up.

Truth is, I don’t put too much emphasis on points and miles, but when I'm about to make a big gear purchase (i.e. laptop, camera) I try to get a new card to leverage my money.

That’s all for this week. See you guys on Saturday over on YouTube!

Cheers to new horizons,

Gareth

P.S. You guys were incredibly helpful last week in replying to this email (to prove to Google I’m real). If you could do it again, that would be great!

P.S.S. Speaking of my gear, I’m building a Gear I Use page to share all the tools and resources I use to run this travel and content business. What else should I add?
